Transcriptionist

Experienced Freelance Transcriptionist

Position Summary

The Upjohn Institute is looking for skilled freelance transcriptionists to transcribe occasional research interviews. Researchers at the Upjohn Institute often conduct one-on-one or small group interviews with research participants to learn more about people’s experiences of work, job searches, retirement plans, and similar topics. In-person interviews are audio recorded and remote interviews are video recorded via Zoom.

Transcriptionists are responsible for delivering highly accurate transcripts of these audio and video interviews to agreed deadlines.

Successful candidates will be added to our roster of transcriptionists and will be offered transcription projects as they arise. As a freelancer, you can accept or decline a given project. Each project typically involves 5 to 10 hours of audio.

Position Requirements

Professional experience doing audio and video transcription, ideally of interviews and focus groups, is essential. You must have excellent fluency in English, strong listening skills, good typing skills, excellent spelling and punctuation, and a willingness to look up unfamiliar terms. You must have good communication skills and work well with members of the Upjohn Institute research team.

You can be based anywhere in the United States. You must provide your own transcription setup (e.g., a password-protected, internet-linked computer; Microsoft Word; transcription software; foot pedal, etc.).

Pay is approximately $80-100 per audio hour (approximately $20-25 per working hour) depending on the complexity of the audio. This is a project-based, independent contractor role.
